Medici tour: history and secrets through family monuments

Get ready for an exciting journey through the history of Florence’s most famous family: the Medici.

First you will visit the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the Medici parish and Florence’s first cathedral. It houses numerous masterpieces by the great names in art and architecture, such as Brunelleschi, Donatello and Verrocchio. Inside is the “Old Sacristy,” one of the must-see sights in Florence, where Brunelleschi’s genius combined with Donatello’s. The Sacristy is in the form of a cube, surmounted by a dome, and contains the funeral monument erected in honor of Cosimo the Elder’s sons.

The tour continues with a visit to the Medici Chapels, the burial place of the entire family. Inside are several rooms, including the famous Chapel of the Princes where six Grand Dukes of the family are buried. This mausoleum is an example of the Florentine Baroque style, and the large dome, designed by Buontalenti, shows the grandeur of the Medici. The New Sacristy, designed and built by Michelangelo, houses the statues of the sarcophagi he made, among which La Notte is considered one of Michelangelo’s finest works.
